Произошло во время Гражданской войны [Civil War] 1-5 мая 1863. Войска северян (75 тыс. человек) под командованием генерала Дж. Хукера [Hooker, Joseph] переправились через р. Раппахэннок [Rappahannock River] к г. Ченселлорсвиллу, западнее г. Фредериксберга, шт. Вирджиния, и попытались окружить южан (50 тыс. человек), защищавших город под командованием генерала Р. Ли [Lee, Robert Edward]. Контрнаступление южан на правый фланг Хукера привело к масштабному столкновению, в ходе которого погибло около 10 тыс. конфедератов и 18 тыс. северян. В ходе сражения погиб генерал Джексон - "Каменная стена" [Jackson, Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall)]. Он был ранен в левую руку, которую пришлось ампутировать. По этому поводу генерал Ли написал: "... Он потерял левую руку, а я правую" ["... He has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right"]. Через два дня после ранения Джексон умер. Это была невосполнимая потеря южан несмотря на их очевидную победу в сражении.
